2008: Budget Gift Aid Transitional Relief
In his budget speech the Chancellor announced a transitional rate of relief of 22% for Gift Aid claims over the next three years.
Transitional relief to cushion the effect of the drop in income tax rates from April 2008 was the main proposal in the Diocesan response to the Gift Aid consultation last year so it is good to know that the Treasury is listening to us!
The transitional relief means that Gift Aid will continue to be worth 28p in the pound for the next 3 years. The good news therefore is that parishes will not be faced with a drop in income as a result of the reduction in income tax rates. However we should continue to look for ways to boost Gift Aid and there is still time to take part in the Diocsean offer of a free database and consultation on ways to increase Gift Aid.
Best wishes,
David Broom
