Thank you!
Lent is primarily a time of preparation – preparation for Easter and therefore preparation for new life. Each Easter, as we relive the drama of Jesus’ last week culminating in that first glorious Easter morning, we too are taken through the gates of death and black despair to the dawn of new hope and life.
Preparing for that, and for the difference it will make not just to our future lives beyond our own physical deaths but also for our lives now, is the focus for Lent. Traditionally, we seek to enhance our mental and spiritual preparation with discipline: by giving up something that we value and enjoy but which is for us something of a luxury, and by doing something extra.
Both of these can be focussed in some extra charitable giving – often the value of the luxury we are doing without. This year in our diocese we have a common focus for that act of giving through our link with the church in Papua New Guinea. I urge us all to respond generously to that. The church there is currently seeking to make a real difference to the quality of women’s lives – their Gender Empowerment hopes and aspirations offer the real prospect of new hope, new involvement and new life. We can help them achieve that!
